In this workshop we will take a relaxed and meditative approach to creating – immersing ourselves in the powerful possibilities of regeneration that mending affords. Mending is so much more than just making do. Visible mending is a wonderful way to reduce our impact on the planet while expressing creativity and honouring the histories of the everyday objects that are closest to us.
Participants are invited to bring along a treasured garment (or other textile) that has seen better days. Explore a range of techniques to darn, patch and strengthen fabrics, to extend their life story and add meaning and beauty to important everyday objects. Everyone will be supported to make mends that reflect their personal style, and a wide range of tools, threads, patching fabrics and inspiration will be supplied.

Michele Grimston is a visual artist and community cultural development practitioner. She has an honours degree in textiles from the Australian National University School of Art and a Masters in Community Cultural Development from the Victorian College of the Arts. She has held solo shows in Canberra, Melbourne and Perth and undertaken multiple artist residencies – creating individual works at the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada and working with schools and community groups across Australia to facilitate community created work. The common thread across her works is connection. Grimston explores the connections which hold together the systems of our world – whether these be personal, social or ecological. The flimsy materials and labour-intensive practices that form the base of her individual practice, hint at the fragility of such systems and the ongoing effort required to sustain them, while her community based works attempt to actively engage in this effort.
