Exhibition | Hannah Gason | Shades of Shadows

  • Canberra Museum and Gallery 176 London Circuit Canberra, ACT, 2601 Australia (map)

In the exhibition Shades of Shadows, contemporary glass artist Hannah Gason continues her exploration of light and its ability to both articulate and create an illusion of space. Working with the interaction of light and architectural forms, Gason looks to the work of pioneer abstractionist Frank Hinder. Light, movement, harmony and order, and later, geometry and luminosity were integral to Hinder's work as he designed many of the decorative elements of Canberra's centre, including Monaro Mall and Civic Square.

This new work engages viewers through the transformative and illusionary effects of light and shadow when glass is added to the mix, much like the shifting shades and textures of the gold glass-mosaic tiled columns designed by Hinder that frame CMAG and border Civic Square.

Opening Hours | Monday to Friday 10am–4pm | Saturday and Sunday 12pm – 4pm | Closed some public holidays

Entry to this exhibition is free | No bookings required

  • Hannah Gason is a visual artist living and working on Ngunnawal and Ngambri Country. Gason is interested in subtle shifts of light and colour, repeating patterns and contrasts between flatness and depth. Her works investigate how glass and light interact and inform one another though the use of transparency, opacity, surface and form. Throughout her practice, Gason has shown a strong sense of material exploration and constantly challenges and pushes the materiality of glass in ex- citing ways.

Since graduating from the ANU School of Art in 2015, Gason has been working from her studio at the Canberra Glassworks. She has exhibited nationally and internationally has shown at Sydney Contemporary, plus held solo exhibitions at the Canberra Glassworks and Drill Hall Gallery. She has been commissioned to create large-scale works in public settings such as an installation for the Canberra Centre to coincide with Floriade and a painted ground mural in response to Frank Hinder's ceiling mosaic for Design Canberra. Her glass work was also included in Enlighten (2020) with a light projection on Parliament House and has work housed in the Australian Parliament House Art Collection, the Australian National Art Glass Collection and the ANU Art Collection.
